The second business I have chosen is a major supermarket chain. They have approximately 259 stores and 19 depots across the UK. Asda was founded by a group of farmers from Yorkshire and now employs 122,000 people in the UK.
Asda provides a service to the public, they sell products and they also sell services for example:

 Car insurance
 Health insurance
 Home insurance

Asda sell a range of products these include:

 Clothes
 Toiletries
 Toys
 Food (wide variety frozen, fresh, Fruit & Veg etc)
 Ready made food (Takeaway eg: Pizza, Curries)
 Home electricals
 Music, videos, DVDs
 Hardware
 Home ware
 Garden Ware

The Asda store in Rochdale is situated in an excellent location; it is near the town centre, in a retail park and access for both customers and suppliers. The retail park is just off a main road in Rochdale, this gives is clear access to customers but more importantly suppliers and their big trucks. The store has its own huge car park; the store also has a petrol pump and kiosk towards the exit of the retail park.

Aims and Objectives

The aims and objectives of the business are:

Aims:
1. ‘Our aim is to identify, monitor and reduce any direct negative effects we have on our environment through a process of continuous monitoring and improvement in the way we manage our day to day business operations.’
2. To expand, Asda are opening new stores where ever they can.
3. To make a profit, they can do this by gaining more customers than their rivals.
4. To provide charitable and voluntary services.

Objectives:
1. To provide a highly competitive service.
2. Increase sales for more profit.

Asda is a Public Limited Company it is owned by share holders, there could be millions. The owners all have limited liability this means that the share holder would not be responsible for the businesses debts.

Advantages Disadvantages
 Has limited liability
This is good for the owners (shareholders) because they are not responsible for the debts.
 The size of the business helps them get money from the bank
If the business was to need some money to pay off debts or something it would be a lot easier to get money from the bank.
 The business would be able to raise large sums of capital
If a new store was being made the business would be able to raise large sums of money to help that store.  The annual accounts are accessible for public inspection
The annual accounts are available for the public and the share holder to inspect.
 Shareholders run the business
The shareholders run the business and decide what happens.
