Throughout a lifetime, one is sure to enjoy many hobbies and activities. Most of these will serve merely as entertaining pastimes. It is extremely rare to something that not only amuses, but shapes your intellect, and personality. The game of chess has not only provided me with endless hours of leisure, recreation, and relaxation, it has contributed to shaping my values, intellect and personality. The infantry advances forward. Knights in their shining armor attack the front lines ferociously, as the bishops secure the fort, their fiery arrows illuminating the night sky. The all-powerful queen takes her post, annihilating all whom cross her path. Her presence alone can cause a whole squadron to retreat. The rooks keep their distance, for they are lancers, and they must protect their master, the king. This illustration of medieval warfare is a typical afternoon for me. I can not imagine a day without playing at least one game of chess. Whether I am practicing alone, playing someone on the internet, or against a friend face to face, the result is the same: pure exhilaration. When I am playing chess, nothing else matters. My mind reaches it’s apex of concentration every time I take the battlefield with my wooden army. I am focused, and nothing can interfere with my stratagem. The intricate manipulation of my lifeless creatures invigorates me beyond comprehension. Chess is one of the only activities that gives my imagination full stimulation. It seems as though my senses are increased during each match, and whether I win or lose, I always enjoy analyzing my tactics and my opponent’s defense for further chess knowledge. No matter where I go, I am sure my chess set will serve its purpose. Just
by looking at a chess board I can relive memories of my matches, and the delight they bring me. Serenity may be hard to find, but it is always available with a game of chess.
