Loco Bloco’s End the Occupation Performance
On October 25, 2003 some 15,000 protestors from all around came to the streets of San Francisco to protest the U.S. occupation of Iraq and to bring the troops home. At the center of the all the emotional chanting and shouting, posters and propaganda, were a group of colorfully dressed young people. Their ages ranged from 12 to 40 years, they represented many different cultures, genders and backgrounds, and they were all playing large drums. Loco Bloco is a drum and dance ensemble based in the Mission district of San Francisco whose goal is to empower end educate youth through music and rhythms of Latin America.
The combined force and strength of the group was amazing. They played Brazilian drums, called surdos, congas, and repeniques, and concentrated on Brazilian, West African, Afro-Cuban, and Hip-Hop rhythms.
