Beer before liquor, never sicker; liquor before beer, you’re in the clear…true or false. True.
Time is the only cure…true or false True.
Well, some of these folk theories are true, and some are false. Wouldn’t it be good to know what works and what doesn’t when it comes to dealing with the effects of alcohol? Based on my survey of this class, 95% of you, like me, do drink, so I thought you might be interested in some of the truth about the unpleasant and even dangerous effects of alcohol, and how to prevent them.
1. I looked up hangover in the dictionary and I quote, “Unpleasant effects resulting from excessive alcohol consumption.” I would describe it as your mom waking you up early after a long night of drinking and telling you to do something that you didn’t care to do the night before. Because you still fell ill you black out and knock you head on the floor.
Hangovers are most often due to over indulgence. Alcohol is considered a drug. Experiencing a Hangover is a mild and temporary version of what a drug addict might suffer when they experience a withdrawal. Hangovers are nature’s way of warning us that we are harming our bodies.
Our bodies warn us to stop or at least slow down drinking by making us fell ill.
The most common symptoms to this are: headache, fatigue, nausea, dehydration, body pains, vomiting, dizziness, and loss of appetite.
2. All forms of alcohol can give you a hangover; however some are worse than others. I’m going to give you some tips before you drink that might help you out.
You know when you wake up after having 3 shots and 5 beers your mouth feels like a big cotton ball? And no matter what you don’t you can’t quench your thirst? That’s because you didn’t have enough fluids throughout the night.
*The most common symptom is dehydration. It is essential that you drink lots of fluids before after and during your drinking experience. The most helpful fluid to drink is actually milk because it contains proteins. Water and juice are also beneficial.
Another rule to live by is to nibble on food during you drink alcohol.
*You should eat before, during and after you drink to slow down the body’s absorption of alcohol.
Always stay away from sweet and carbonated or mixed drinks
*Sweet, tropical drinks such as Margaritas and Mai Tais disguise the taste; you may not know how much you are really consuming. If you do indulge in an occasional pina colada try having a glass of water in between orders.
*Carbonated or bubbly drinks like wine and mixed drinks like Jack and coke speed up absorption. Jean Prescott suggests drinking lighter colored drinks such as Gin and vodka.
*Cheaper brands are worse than expensive ones because they undergo a less extensive distillation process. The reason for this is they are cheaper to produce. Next time you go to the liquor store pay a few more dollars and get the better brand. You might be paying more now…but you body wont be paying you back later.
Always time your drinks biased on your approximate tolerance. You should always drink slowly to allow your body to process alcohol. REMEMBER: The liver can only process 2 teaspoons of alcohol an hour. So drinking three 12oz. Beers takes 5-6 hours
The best way to avoid a hangover is to following the advice I’ve just given you: eat and drink while you are while you consume alcohol, don’t be fooled by the ease of drinking mixed drinks, buy and drink more expensive brands. But if these preventions don’t work, and you get a hangover, there are some things that work better than others.
3. For centuries, cultures around the world have searched for a cure for hangovers. Few of them are helpful and none of them cure. The strong desire for a hangover cure has led to many strange, experimental remedies. For example, in the Middle Ages they tried to relieve their pain by eating a mixture that included raw eel.
As I said before time is the only cure. In the mean time get lots of rest and take care of you body.
*If you feel like you are going to throw up, let it go. Although throwing up isn’t much fun its actually good for you because your body is getting rid of its poisons. The less alcohol inside you the better you feel.
*Get lots of rest. Treat a hangover as if you were sick, and you will get better quicker. Try to rest as long as possible. Even though you are not drunk, you are still not well.
As you can see there are lots of things you can do to prevent a hangover, but not too many things you can do to quickly get rid of one. It will always much easier to get a hangover than to cure one.
CONCLUSION:
The only surefire way to alleviate a hangover is not to get one in the first place. Some of us have tried to come up with our own cure. As for me, I’m still searching for one that works. I honestly don’t have the answer that can cure a hangover, except Time is the only cure…. true or false…………….True
