The lyrics of the songs “Changes” written and sung by 2 Pac and “Where is the Love” by the Black Eyed Peas, both have strong opinions about todays problomatic issues. Some of them being racism, war and greed. Throughout their songs the writers express there thoughts on these subjects, in both different and similar ways. Focusing more on some points than others.
One of the sinewy messages considered in the poem “Where is the Love”, the Black Eyed Peas say, “...if you only have love for your own race- Then you only leave space to discriminate- And to discriminate only generates hate.” Discrimating starts a chain reaction, This seemed to express quite clearly. 2 Pac also wrote some strong things as well. When he said “I see no changes all i see is racist faces- misplaced hate makes disgrace to races.” A meaningful couplet was used here, which really seemed to link the two thoughts together. He also wrote “and the only time we chill is when we kill eachother- it takes skill to be real, time to heal eachother.” 2 Pac believes it only takes time before races will start to get along, while the B.E.P. believe “you gotta have love just to set it straight.” They both use strong rhyming schemes in their stanzas to get the point across, but their ideas on how to correct racism is different.
War, was talked about a little more thuroughly in the song “Where is the Love.” It often seemed to talk about it in the chorus. Part of the chorus says “People killin’, people dyin’- Children hurt and you can hear them cryin’,” This maybe an example of some of the bad effects from war. “Changes” says, “It’s war on the streets and the war in the Middle East- Instead of war on poverty they got war on drugs ...” 2 Pac dwells more on the things that cause war and how to fight them. Another example from the Black Eyed Peas is “A war is goin’ on but the reason’s undercover- The truth is kept secret, it’s swept under the rug- If you never know truth then you can never know love” These lines are saying that if you don’t know why there are problems in this world, then you don’t have enough love to care. The poems get their points across quite well, They make a person ponder over these things mentioned here about some of the changes that could be made, to make this world a better place.
Greed is probably one of the biggest aspects in the whole world, that brings a person to hate. It grows within until eventually it gets so big it completely rules a person’s life. It can take all sorts of shapes, making it all the more dangerous, “Most of us only care about money makin’- Selfishness got us followin’ our wrong direction.” “Our wrong direction,” could mean our human nature getting the best of us. Making us want more and more and more, until finally the direction we takes just leads us straight to a dried out desert. Where the fruit has already be sucked out, no life, no nothing. The greed sucked it all out until there was nothing left to take. “Give crack to the kids who the hell cares only one less ugly mouth on the welfare- First ship ‘em dope and let ‘em deal to the brothers- give ‘em guns step back and watch ‘em kill each other.” Some people don’t care about what happens to others they step on to get to the top. Looking around a person can see it all the time. Kids cheating off of others to get better marks, adults ripping each other off in work. 2 Pac seems to know what this world is all about. Black Eyed Peas also seem to know the ways of the world.
Racism, War and Greed are three of the worlds worst problems. The songs “Changes” and “Where is the Love,” clearly share their views on these three things, both in different and similar ways, focusing more on some points than others. If there are not any “changes” made soon this world will be sucked dry of all of it’s nutrients. The only solution to this issue is love! “‘Cause people got me, got me questionin’- Where is the Love?”
