If there was ever an example of a crooked politician look no further than Cuyahoga County Recorder Patrick O’Malley. How else could you explain O’Malley’s most recent court hearing? On July 3, 2004 he was arrested for Domestic Violence after he allegedly shoved his wife into a closet door. This was the second time he has been arrested for domestic violence since 1991 when he attacked his first wife.
O’Malley was taken to the Bedford jail where he was supposed to spend the 3 day holiday weekend. After all, the courts were closed Monday July 4th right? Not if you call in a favor and get a judge to let you out. At O’Malley’s request Municipal Court Clerk Thomas Day arranged this “special” holiday hearing. Thomas Day has a brother that works for O’Malley in the recorders office and is also a close political friend. The special treatment didn’t stop there. Later it was reported Prosecutor Blair Melling had been the recipient of campaign contributions from O’Malley in his last political campaign. So far no one will admit this was the equivalent to calling in a favor, but O’Malley was the only prisoner to be released that Monday.
Vicki O’Malley was still at home when her husband was released. Imagine her surprise when her attacker just shows up back home. The Police department originally advised her she was safe until Tuesday, when her husband would go before the judge. Vicki O’Malley would also be given the chance to appear under her rights as the victim. Municipal court officials claimed they tried to call her at work. It was on the holiday and her offices at the Ohio Lottery Commission were closed. Vicki O’Malley filed for divorce this past June. Her main fear is that her husband’s political standing will win him a favorable decision in the divorce proceedings.
Patrick O’Malley’s abuse of the court system is just one example of what we do not need from an elected official. This what happens when you have career politicians watching out for each other. It is clear that Patrick O’Malley needs to learn how to control his anger. Last year he had another run in with police when he was involved in a fight between three men and his son. He pleaded guilty to Disorderly Conduct and paid the fine. O’Malley has young children and they need a better role model than this. Maybe some time out of the public spotlight will give him the time he needs to get his life back together.
September 20, 2004 is the date Patrick O’Malley goes to court on Domestic Violence charges. He believes that only a trial will bring out details of this case that will prove he is innocent. With all the problems that need resolved in this city, do we need our politicians on trial for wife beating? He needs to learn his lesson and the voters need to elect a person who can concentrate all his efforts to helping this city.
