The Republic of South Africa is a comparatively large country, covering 1,221,042 square kilometers and with an estimated population of about 40 million. An estimate in 2001 suggested that 20.1% of the population is living with HIV / AIDS, an estimated 13% of the world's total. A survey published in March 2004 shows that South Africans spend more time at funerals than they do having their hair cut, shopping or having barbeques. It found that over twice as many people had been to a funeral in the past month as had been to a wedding. It is estimated that about 600 people in South Africa die of HIV-related illnesses each day.
In 1993 the prevalence rate was 4.3% based studies that they did. The National Health Department reported that the number of recorded HIV infections had increased 60% in the previous two years and the number was expected to double in 1993. A survey of women attending health clinics indicated that nationally some 322,000 people were infected. Compare that to the studies they did in 2002 where the prevalence rate was 26.5%.
HIV education in South Africa, as in many countries, only became seen as an important issue when HIV had already been spread all over. There isn’t enough education in South Africa. The government of South Africa ran an ad campaign to educate the people of South Africa about AIDS but the ad’s had little or no effect on the people and their sexual behavior. So AIDS is still spreading rapidly. They launched another Ad campaign more recently using television, radio and billboards and informing people about AIDS and telling them to change their sexual behavior.
