Assignment: Sit in a room for 15 minutes with no sounds or distractions, than record what you heard.

:
Silence…What do you Hear?

I sat there silently starring at the wall. I started to see little shapes forming on it creating eye candy. “Am I seeing something, or was it really happening?” I thought to myself as I starred motionless. I could feel my pupils swelling and my stomach started to turn. “Was it from the psychedelic drugs I had taken previously?” I pondered to myself. As I started to convince myself I was hallucinating, I began to laugh and thought “How could I be? I have never done psychedelic drugs before?”
The room was silent and I quietly breathed amongst myself for 15 minutes. Sitting on the ground was starting to get uncomfortable so I shifted into a laying position. I laid quietly on the ground looking at the ceiling and started to think to myself.
I started to see things in my room which I have never noticed before. The small corner where the paint is flaking off, the larger chip taken out of the porcelain sink, the tiny holes on the walls from hanging up photos of my close friends back home, and so much more caught my attention. I was unsure if I was noticing these things because there was no music playing, my room mates weren’t yelling to each other through the walls, and the hookah wasn’t making bubbling sounds which is consistent from day to day.
My ears felt as if they were slowly clogging up. Ear wax was pouring down into the tubes of my ears because I was paying such close attention to what I was listening to. I looked over at an open drawer and pulled out a Q-tip and quickly cleaned my ears, but to my surprise, they were already clean. I realized I had just produced sound which caught me off balance. After five minutes had passed by, I was already use to the silence and enjoyed it. I decided to reset the timer on the clock so I could complete the assignment of no distractions or sounds for 15 minutes.
After resetting the clock, I grabbed the two, large, blue, fluffy pillows off my bed and laid back down on the ground. I could feel a sharp object pressing against the side of my hip which I quickly readjusted to avoid. After a few minutes of struggling and rolling around on the floor, I finally found a comfortable position.
I started to look around the room again, listening to the silence as close as I could. I started to hear a quiet buzzing sound coming from the opposite side of the room. I tried to ignore it. The buzz stayed present for what seemed to be hours. I looked up at the clock to see how much longer I have until I could find the buzzing sound, but realized only two minutes had passed by. I slowly rolled over onto my stomach looking in the direction which I heard the sound coming from. As soon as I pin pointed the position which I believed the sound was coming from, silence flooded the room again. The irritating buzzing sound was just my imagination I later found out.
I decided to slowly get up and crawl into my bed for a more comfortable position. I let my body fall into the bed which gave me a sense of protection. I swiftly pulled the large covers over my body, making only my head visual. As I finally rested still after shuffling around, I laid silently and started to stare around the room again.
As I was lying in bed, I shuffled through the large files of stories inside my brain and came across one which really stood out at the time. My best friends Bob, Bernard, Frank, and I decided one night to go out to the country and create a crop circle. A crop circle consists of large designs on farmers properties by pressing down the tall grass or wheat in certain areas. We had recently seen a documentary on how to make crop circles which really came to our attention when we realized how simple it was to make one. We set off to the local Ace Hardware store and bought all of the supplies. After we returned home, we quickly put together our new tools. It was getting late in the night, so we decided that we would complete the tools the next day.
After a long night of rolling around in bed and not be able to sleep from the excitement I had, it was time to finish our crop circle tools. We all sat down at my house and plotted on the computer a design we would like to create.
The crop circle we came up with had no significance but we thought it would be fun to create one. Crop circles were believed to have been created by aliens for a long period of time, until two teenaged kids were caught creating one.
We had completed our design and assigned each person to a certain part of the circle. Although there weren’t any actual circles included in ours, it was still considered to be a “crop circle.” We geared up in camouflage attire and set out for the night. We drove ten minutes to the nearest open farmland. We had remembered that we knew of a place where we could do it and not cause any troubles so we drove to our location. We got out of my friends truck and observed the land in which we were to create the crop circle. The grass was up to our hips which made us believe no one cared about the land so we grabbed our tools and started to hike to the center of the crop. With the print outs of the design in one hand, and miscellaneous tools in the other we kept on hiking while our adrenaline was rushing.
As we reached our destination we decided to sit down and go over exactly what we are going to do. We figured out the best way to complete it and put the final pieces together of our tools. We all started with the center ring because it was the largest portion of the circle, 50 feet wide and 60 feet long. After we completed the center ring we all met back up and our adrenaline was rushing even more. We had nothing to worry about, we were on unattended land which was overgrown, but we were still nervous. We quickly gulped down our canisters of water and completed the rest of the crop circle. The three guys and me took our picture in front of it and returned to the truck.
Luke all of the sudden stopped all of us from walking and pointed ahead. We notice the distant blue and red flickering lights. “What the hell is that?” we asked ourselves. “Cops!” I shouted out after I looked again at them. “You guys stay calm and follow me” I said to my friends. All of the sudden I was the leader of the pack. We turned around and headed back to the crop circle. We hiked down a small embankment and hid our tools in a hole in the ground we had previously dug. We hiked out to the main road and slowly started to walk in the direction of our truck. A large spot light coming from the police officers car hit us directly in the face so we dove into the tall grass and laid there silently. We could see our breath coming out of our mouth because it was so cold. We could hear our jaws jittering from shaking and my cell phone was vibrating in my pocket from an incoming call. We could hear the cop car start in the distance and the engine slowly got louder, which meant he was getting closer. We all crawled about four more feet into the tall grass and laid next to each other like Twinkies in a package.
“Hello. Who is in there?” we hear over the police officers loud speaker. We said nothing. We stayed still and silent. I instructed each person to slowly crawl forward roughly five feet. I was the last to move. As we made our way deeper into the grass, the officer called for backup. After a few minutes of crawling towards the truck, we had reached our destination. We ripped off our camouflage and stashed it in the spare tire compartment. We all leaped into the truck and started to drive away, but before we could celebrate, there was a police officer behind us.
We had explained to the officer that we ran out of gas, and our friend had just dropped us back off with a gallon to make it home. The officer went onto questioning us about some unusual suspects dressed in camouflage on the main road but we acted as if we knew nothing. The officer than went onto telling us that he was just trying to figure out why our truck was parked there and we were in no trouble. He couldn’t see the crop circle we had created yet, because it was dark out side and the sun wasn’t rising. He simply told us to enjoy the rest of the night and if we were to break down on that road again, to pull off to the side more. We were all relieved as we drove away.
Lying in bed listening to the still sound of my room caused me to remember an experience which was nerve wrecking. Overall, my experience while listening was unusual. I think that this assignment was beneficial to me because it made me feel like I was home again with my friends. If I were to have to do this assignment again, I would. I would also recommend this assignment because it was a great learning experience.
