According to the FBI there are thousands of innocent children killed every year. These children are being killed by6 guns. Some are accidental deaths by a child playing with the gun, some are from school shootings and others are by a stray bullet in a drive by. According to the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution we have the right to bear arms, but do we really need guns. If there were no guns there would be fewer innocents killed. When was the last time you heard of a drive by knifing?

I. Laws
A. Some states have right-to-carry laws.
1. Requires guns to be registered.
2. As of 1998 31 states have adopted the law.
B. Brady Bill
1. Signed in 1994
2. 5 day waiting period to purchase guns
3. Requires a background check of all people trying to buy a gun.
4. In 1997 Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional.
5. In 1998 changed it into an instant felon ID system.
C. Assault Weapons Ban
1. Bans Automatic and semiautomatic guns
a. Guns with:
(1) Detachable magazines
(2) Folding Stock
(3) Pistol Grip
2. As of September 13, 2004, the ban on assault weapons expired.
a. Expired one month before President Bush’s NRA endorsement
(1) Some people say that’s why it was not renewed
(2) John Kerry also owns a gun.
D. Arkansas Laws
1. Only have to have permits to carry handguns.
2. No required registration.
II. Constitution (2nd amendment)
A. “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right to the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
B. Some people think that all guns should be legal
1. If 2nd amendment meant that, then we should be able to have tanks, bazookas or even nuclear weapons.
C. 1st amendment says we have the freedom of speech, but yet we can’t say anything that infringes on other peoples rights.
D. So there should be more limitations on guns.
III. Violence
A. In 1997 there were 11,000 murders by use of a gun.
1. Also, there were 691,000 violent crimes committed involving a gun.
B. Florida
1. Right-to-carry law
2. Gun crimes went down 37% in Florida and went up 15% in the U.S.
C. Between 1993 and 1998 there have been 9 school shootings.

IV. Reasons for Guns
A. Hunting
1. There is really not a need for hunting.
2. Use a bow and arrow.
B. Protection
1. Guns kept in home is 43 times more likely to kill a member of the family.
2. 17% of robbery victims are injured when using a gun to defend themselves
3. If you have a gun in your home, you are more likely to use it when you get mad.
C. Protection against a dictatorship
1. We elect all our officials.
2. We can impeach all our officials.
3. There are 270 million people in the U.S.
4. We have no threat of a “Hitler” taking over.
Most people say that the reason they own a gun is for protection, but if there were no guns we wouldn’t have to protect ourselves from them. Guns kill many innocent people every year. And will continue killing little children until we do something about it. And the only real solution is to completely ban guns.
