Music is a most clear aspect of my life. Just after I turned three years old, I had begun to show signs of musical skills. As years have gone by, music has become more of a part of me. I have learned to play various instruments, develop skills for writing music and lyrics, and developed a sense of emphasis for when it comes to things such as writing or playing solos.
Early in my life I was taught many things by my grandpa, a preacher and gospel singer. His great musical talents had influenced my mom’s entire family and hundreds of other people as well. I remember Grandma, Grandpa, my Mom, and her five sisters going to various churches to perform. Starting out, I learned to recognize various pitches, harmony, and melody. A few years later I started to pick up a few of the many instruments Grandpa had. Experimenting with their sounds, I started to find the fine line between noise and music, as some would say. I eventually found myself up on the small stages above the altar playing along, to say, with Grandpa and the rest of the family.
Upon reaching 5th grade, I started learning to play alto saxophone. With this, I learned how to read and write music, starting with the basics. Working my way into high school, I was taught how to play many other instruments as well including: trumpet, tuba, trombone, clarinet, and drums. Nearing the last 9 weeks of my junior year, I started picking up my mom’s old guitar, an Epiphone acoustic. My best friend Andy offered to teach me to play. He said it was quite a pleasure teaching me because I caught on so quickly. He believed it was due to my strong musical background.
As years passed, I continued writing music. I developed many different styles, rhythms, and melodies and uniquely combined many to create some amazing riffs. When writing a song, I may try mixing rhythms and progressions from other songs in an attempt to make something new and original, or create something of my own. Next I play the music repetitively until I discover the tone and mood, then I begin to write lyrics. I then add the lead part(s), and finally the solo, if it will help improve the song.
Throughout my years as a musician, I’ve written dozens of songs, both instrumental or with vocals. When ever I’m not at work or doing something for school, you can be sure to find me playing my music or working on my next masterpiece. I practice often as I can so I may become a better musician, to strengthen the greatest aspect in my life, music.
