You looking out of your window and you see lights all over the place, but where the moon should be looks like a big black hole. This is what the men on the Apollo 11 saw when they were looking for the moon in space. The Apollo 11 is about when a crew of three goes to the moon and comes back to earth. This crew was picked because they were the best of the best in flying the spacecrafts.
The crew that went to the moon was Michael Collins which was born on October 30, 1930, in Rome, Italy. He was the command of the module pilot. Neil Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930 on his grandparents' farm near Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was commander of the mission. And Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. was born in Montclair, New Jersey, on January 20, 1930. He was the lunar module pilot.
The backup crew was William A. Anders was born October 17, 1933, in Hong Kong. He would have been the command of the module pilot. James Lovell was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 25, 1928. He would have been commander of the mission. Fred Haise was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, on November 14, 1933. He would have been the lunar module pilot. Both crews were able to do this mission, but the hardest thing was the launch, and that is where Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong, and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. were better than the backup crew.
On July 16, 1969 at 9:32 am about 1000 people filled Kennedy Space Center viewing stands to see the liftoff of Apollo 11. There were no launch delays or anything. The launch was perfect. It was speeding 17,400 mph after twenty min. Then Apollo began to orbit around the earth to get in order with the moon.
The orbit around the earth was three hours long than it turned toward the moon. When Apollo got to the moon it orbits the moon for three days. While it was orbiting the Eagle separate from Columbia and starts to go to the moon, it was successful.
On July 24, 1964 at 12:50pm the Eagle descended slowly on to the moon. The Eagle went pass the place where they where to land. It only had seven seconds of fuel left when they landed on the moon. They landed on the wrong spot of the moon. “The Eagle has landed,” said Neil Armstrong.
The moon look like a big black hole from far away in space, but once on it was light out and they could see the moon. The cameras outside of the craft sent pictures to earth. When Armstrong and Aldrin got the go to walk on the moon, they took there first steps on the moon. Armstrong was the first person on the moon, Aldrin was the second. When on the moon they got all different kind of stuff. On thing that they brought back were moon rocks. They are blue with many holes.
On July 21 Armstrong and Aldrin are ready to leave. They get in the Lm which is on the Eagle. The Lm unhooked from the Eagle and took Armstrong and Aldrin in to orbit. Where the Lm hooked on to the Columbia spacecraft. Which was orbiting around the moon. It was the hardest thing so they called it the big test and they did it perfect. They were on there way home.
On July 24, 1969 the Columbia splashed in to the Pacific Ocean where it finished a long eight day journey in space. It was one of the most important journeys of the U.S. and they did it all as it was to be done.
Mission Highlight is it was the first lunar landing, first step on the moon and the first liftoff from the moon. The crew got a mission objective sheet in the beginning and it said manned lunar landing and return safely. They did both in eight days.
This is one of the best things NASA has every done. They work so hard to get to this and they got it. They a sent guy out to space to see if they would live and they did. They sent a spaceship out to space to see if it would work and it worked, all so that Apollo 11 could landed on the moon and come back safely to earth.
