Everyone experiences diverse emotions and mood changes throughout life. Those feelings are an ordinary part of life that most individuals acknowledge and confront. On the other hand, there are several individuals who find it hard to cope with such changes. This causes those individuals to feel an overwhelming amount of enragement, helplessness, and unhappiness. In addition, if a person allows for those feelings to continue, it may cause an individual to withdraw from social interaction, encounter a loss of interest and energy, and they may find it difficult to experience a sense of fulfillment. Other factors like stress, low self-esteem, and anxiety can also hinder a person’s capability to feel satisfied or happy. Depression can occur even when life is splendid.
Depression is a medical illness that constantly does not get treated because the innumerable amount of people who either find it difficult to ask for help, do not know treatments are available, or do not recognize the symptoms. Fortunately, different treatments are available for those individuals who suffer from this major depressive disorder. Antidepressant medicine is one of the ways to help treat depression. I strongly believe that nobody should have to rely upon a drug to help elevate their mood and restore their sense of well-being. The ability to experience pleasure and accomplishment should come from within one’s soul.
Another way to treat depression is through Cognitive therapy, which allows an individual to effectively develop a positive self-assessment, set positive goals, and creates the opportunity to appreciate life from a positive perspective. In the video about Major Depressive Disorder, Barbara admitted she had little hope and ambition when she stated that it was hard for her to get out of bed. Cognitive therapy can help identify and understand how to overcome anything that you put your mind in to. A cognitive therapist helps implement beneficial strategies when a stressful situation occurs. Through these strategies the individual will learn how to manage and cope with the stress that once caused their depression. Moreover, pessimistic ideas, unrealistic expectations, and critical self-evaluations will also be addressed and implemented through cognitive therapy. The psychological treatment is provided through supportive counseling and encounter groups which helps address the feelings of hopelessness that accompanies depression. Most importantly, the troublesome areas of anyone’s life that is creating significant stress, and contributing to the depression, will be changed through problem solving therapy. On the other hand, behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy will help develop better coping skills and help solve relationship problems. Psychologists use cognitive therapy build a strong sense of personal identity, provide insight on a new perspective, and stress an actualization on how pessimistic views will and can affect an individual’s life.
Conclusively, cognitive therapy helps bring forth change, so that these issues will not take control of an individual’s life again. Those who are treated through cognitive behavior therapy receive the best treatment that is available because they willingly changed their negative state of mind and develop a clear self-perception.
