Global and American Politics
Global and American Politics

Global and American politics are directly tied to human rights and social class in almost every aspect of life. The most prevalent issue involving this topic, is by being established financially, or not, will in turn determine your status in society. Along with the financially; race, gender and age also determine how one is affected in society. In the upcoming essay, I will explain the negatives as well as few positives that global and American politics have on our society.
First off, in America we base pretty much social class on money and somewhat race/gender. The more money you have, the more important and higher achieved status you will have. That in turn, will give your word a lot more importance behind it in politics as opposed to a homeless man in Idaho for example. All politicians in American as well as other countries have money, and a good amount of it. I am sure a lot of people have heard the terminology before that “Money is Power”. Well that statement unfortunately is pretty much always true.
America is and always has been divided between basically three class structures; upper class, middle class, and of course lower class, and yes all these classes are determined by financial stability. In American politics for example, politicians always strive to gain people’s vote based on financial equality for everyone, gender rights, and race rights. This topic started to heat up in the 1960’s with JFK and is instilled in present day politics. The only problem is we as a country have been striving for equality in all of these areas for years now to no avail. The even worse part about that is we have such great potential to do so; it’s just that America as a whole has places too much emphasis on other topics like money and war. The upper class is getting the tax cuts, women are still being cheated out of jobs which they are obviously qualified for, and the color of somebody’s skin is basis for many preconceived judgments.
. What really pisses me off about this whole situation in the gender area for starters, is women are overlooked for jobs. I can attest to this because recently while applying for a job at a local corporation, my own mother was disregarded for a position of regional management by a man who has less education, experience, and quite frankly tact than her. The main reason why she got the job you ask? Because she was a woman. Now, in a country where racial and gender equality are ‘supposed’ to be equal, it’s not even remotely close. This isn’t the 1920’s; women now have college educations and can perform just as easily in the workplace as men can. A lot of politicians overlook this situation in our country as a menial problem, well it’s definitely not. Ironically enough it directly affects my family and I, because now my mother is unemployed and this is not the right time to be unemployed in our country. Looking back on the situation, I think to myself what the rationalization for my mom being overlooked for that job. Time and time again I come to the conclusion it was probably because she being a woman, was perceived as a weaker individual who can’t compete in a competitive sales field.
Another subject I want to touch base on is human rights in our country which are directly tied to politics. For a moment let’s look at the word, Equality. A lot of people define equality as everybody being equal ethically and morally. That is a great definition, but is it actually happening in our country? I would have to say no. Both sides of our government made tremendous strides in the 1960’s to make racial equality prevalent. But now in 2005, the topic is pretty much unspoken about because we have other fish to fry, like pointless wars. The problem with that is, segregation of race and gender still occurs within state public schools, the workplace, pretty much anywhere in general. People get overlooked for jobs based on their race. Believe it or not I have heard children firsthand get cheated out of a grade they deserve in school based on the color of their skin. My mother was an assistant teacher at a middle school for seven years under a teacher that was “highly racist”, her words. The teacher would base grades by race in which causation children got good grades and minorities/blacks did not, not based on schoolwork either.
On this subject, page 483 in The Arlington Reader there is an article on “The Declaration of Independence” by Thomas Jefferson. Quite a known passage, but what strikes me the most about this highly important part of our constitution is when it says “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men ARE created equal”. Well let’s see, all men are created equal. Our country was based on that policy, yet the funny part is that it definitely does not occur today. So in a sense, our country, make that our politicians, are a bunch of hypocrites. They say that we follow the constitution word by word, but we don’t. Doesn’t that sound a little hypocritical there. Unfortunately this example can be perceived as hypocritical statement because Jefferson was a bit corrupt but the idea of what I am saying is prevalent. As much as I dislike her Hilary Clinton, she has made tremendous strides in women’s rights by being a strong senate member as well as highly successful lawyer. The bottom line is women are equally as good in the workplace as men regardless of what certain people say. If they have the same education as a man, then they can do the same work.
The United States government has the underlying control over the people within its borders; therefore it is the government’s responsibility to abide by the constitution. Another part of the constitution states “To secure these rights, governments are instituted among men deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”. In other words, the government is here to serve and protect the people within it, which bring me to my point that it simply isn’t happening. We have a war going on over in Iraq but a lot of people overlook the war right here within our own country between our own people; White vs. Black, Men vs. Women, and even Rich vs. Poor. Absurdity is the word that describes this situation from my standpoint. The American government has the power to take care of the problems that are separating our country day by day. But will they? I hope so.
