Computers are machines that are created by humans. These machines are used for doing complicate and boring tasks. In order for computers to do their jobs correctly they require commands that are made by humans. Hence, computers are controlled by and depended on humans; computers cannot think on their own. They do not even have the sense that they are actually working on some complicated problems.

To the question of “can machine thinks?” we should look in to the definition of “think”. Using the word “think” might contains hazard to the question. According to Webster’s New Compact Dictionary defines ‘think’ as "1. Have a mind. 2. Believe. 3. Employ the mind.” Having a mind means having its own psychological states but, can we determine that a computer have a psychological states as well? In my opinion no, all the computer parts including the hardware and software are all in physical form, since everything could be copied or reformed. Since all parts of the computer are in physical form then how can we determine that a computer also have a psychological states. On the other hand, mind, personality or thought cannot be reformed; therefore, we cannot conclude that the computers can think. They only can do stuff that humans teach them, without humans these machines are useless. We can say a machine is like a human body since it has most of the characteristic a human has but it has no mind to think. So the word “think” is using improperly in this situation. Humans consider ourselves as some special living object is because we have the ability to solve and think of problems. This ability is usually come with all living objects in this world. Computers cannot be a living object because they cannot come up with their own ability to move or to communicate. Also computers cannot come up with their own types of languages between their own types. Also computers are machines that are being created by humans. A living thing also has a characteristic that it cannot be created. They are always reproducing naturally by their own kinds. Sometimes things will never be imitated because it is too complicated. We can only observe them and knowing how it works. This could be proven from a question of weather astrophysics can build a galaxy.


In order to think in a reasonable manner, I think one’s need to know what “understand” is. Understand is the ideal though of how much information is stored from the out put. Understanding something could be way more important than to think because before you can think of something you must understand it first. Or else you would not be able to think properly since everything becomes meaningless. When you input a word to the computer the computer will never understand it; although, an online dictionary might tell you the meaning of any words. This doesn’t mean that a computer understands all words, but it is just recalling symbols or definitions that a human or programmer tells them. I have to say that the computers are just machines that have a huge storage device that can recall loads of information. To them any definitions of words are only combinations of 0’s and 1’s. They would not understand what do these combinations of 0’s and 1’s mean. Also we humans have the total power of how the 0’s and 1’s represents.

To discover if a machine can think we should consider that fact that if a machine can write a romantic poem. Writing a poem requires a lot of emotional feelings. Emotion is a feeling that ones feel deep inside there mind. There is no set of formulas or programs that can simulate emotions. Also an emotion will lead to responses to an action of what might ones will do. Any living thing that has a mind will act differently to a specific situation due to one’s experience from the past and the nurture something has. Since all computer runs by a program and feelings cannot be acted out or written as a program then it is impossible to say that a computer can think by their own. On the other hand computer will never get any experience from outside the world because it will never know what is right or wrong. Although it might realize some errors since, it might contain some bugs in the program causes the whole system to freeze but still it cannot correct its problem itself. The thinking part as to correct errors is done by the programmers. As the program gets corrected it will get the correct response every time by following a program so, it will never pickup any experiences.

Having freewill is another big factor to considering if a computer can think. Freewill base on own knowledge is a decision that is not controlled or influent by anyone else but yourself. Computers can only do things that are being programmed by a programmer. They do not have the intelligence of choosing what they want to do. Some people might have said that computers are smart but the word “smart” is not using properly because they cannot even make their decision how they can be smart. The intelligence part should be credited to the programmers. To give a proper word to describe computer’s work “fast-worker” would be a better choice. Computers are actually working faster with than a human when comes to simple problems. Computers are computers. They will never be replaced human beings. Computers can be “like” humans but, they will never be one. Although, these few years the techniques of artificial intelligence are being improved quickly but it is still impossible to teach a computer to learn by itself. Another fact that proves that the computer cannot think is that it cannot judge weather what is positive or negative is. That’s why there are many crimes through the internet. If a computer knows hacking is wrong then it will disobey a hacker’s command. In fact the computer is used as a tool for hacking other computer systems.

Human thinks is because they have desires to learn how things work. We are willing to think of a solution to a problem that might be meaningless in our life. It is just because of this desires we create the computer to assist us with boring and complicating tasks. Computer obviously do not have any desires if they do they would have escaped from the loads of work that we command them do. It is not possible to have a living thing that have a mind that can work for everyday with out a break. Also something that has a mind would not be able to handle loads of work and never make mistakes to a problem. Humans make mistakes is usually due to the fact that they are unconscious or thinking other stuff. Only something that has no conscious or unconscious states can do a job perfectly with no rest because they just do the work that we ask them to do.

Computers will never have its’ own mind because it is too complicated to built. Also they cannot think is because they cannot make their own decisions or think logically in its’ mind. Since they do not come with a mind then they would not consider being able to solve any problems. With all these facts that help explains a computer then I have to conclude that the computer will never be able to think
