Three Qualities of a Good Comedian

The comedian stood on the stage with a weird grin on his face. He put the microphone to his lips and began to tell one of the funniest jokes that I have ever heard in my life. “A father is over protective of his daughter, but is very proud when his son accomplishes something. If a father comes home early and walks in on his son having sex on the couch then you will probably hear him say, good job son!!! If a father walks in on his daughter having sex on the couch then he would probably try to kill the guy she was having sex with.” A comedian is a professional entertainer who tells jokes or performs various other comic acts. To me three qualities of a good comedian would be; to have a good sense of humor, have life experiences, and knowing when to repeat jokes that you have already told.

A good sense of humor simply means that someone has the ability to make others laugh whether they want to or not. A comedian should have a good sense or humor because that is a part of the job description. Humorous people also have learned that being that way helps to soothe any nerves, or to make others feel more comfortable in some situations. Humor is therapeutic. For example, it has been proven that laughing lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormone and increases muscle flexion. Laughter also brings in positive emotions, and relieves us of negative ones.

I think that a comedian has to have life experiences. A comedian should be a person who has ideas about political and personal issues. A comedian should be a person who can get up on that stage and relate to the same situations and the same problems that his audience may have experienced. As a comedian that person should be able to relate. For example, a good comedian should be a person who has been robbed, or poor; someone who is fed up with the conditions of public schools, or is upset about the prices of sneakers; a down to earth person who doesn’t drive a fancy car and loves to eat at McDonalds. A comedian should be someone who is just like me.

In the world of comedy people are judged by what they say. Either what is said is funny and everyone learns to love it, or they flop because comedy just isn’t their thing. Some comedians have a problem with telling the same jokes over and over again. One reason why some tell the same jokes over is because everyone got a good laugh out of it the first time around. After a while the joke isn’t funny anymore. An audience hates to be subjected to the same jokes and sometimes that is what happens when a male/female enters the world of comedy; that is why in our society today a person who brings new jokes to the table is considered the next Martin Lawrence. Martin Lawrence is a comedian who is known world wide and has been for the last ten to fifteen years. There comes a time when a joke should be repeated. If a comedian gets sponsored and is asked to make a video or a CD then the jokes that were told in the past that were funny should be presented.

With all of the ups and downs to being a comedian one would think that people would choose job that are of broader range. Why would someone want to stand up on a stage and tell jokes just so at the end of the day everyone who heard him/her can judge them? No matter if a comedian is funny, understands the rules of the comedic world, or can relate to the problems that our society faces, whatever job he holds he will be judged by the job that he does. For example, if a person chooses to be a librarian instead of a comedian, then they will be judged on how lazy they appear to be or whether or not they offer assistance as soon as it is requested. No matter the job or its description people get judged on a daily basis by what they say or do.
