Media Going Down The Drain
Media Going Down The Drain

The media today is persistent on repeating the statement that society today is going down the drain. Many examples and scenarios agree with and support this claim. However there is one dynamic that is the largest contributing factor to the steady corruption of our society and its morals. In the delayed thesis style of writing, I will present to you a few cases of why what some people think is harmless entertainment is actually a black hole which is devouring our values and an increasing rate.

The internet possesses a wide selection of gates and portals that lead to many inappropriate things. One example, pornography, is openly available to everyone who has access to the internet. Men, women, and children alike can view images and watch videos of sexual acts with the simple click of a mouse. The types of porn vary greatly from underage sex acts to sadomasochism. The millions of forms of these acts express the idea that sex is not a special, sensual, pure act of passion towards someone you love. Instead, they are shown that sex is dirty, violent, and unsacred. At an ever increasing pace, society’s view on intercourse has been withered and eroded down into nothing but a simple act of irresponsible pleasure.

Another way the internet is causing the decline of our morals is by allowing access to hate sites. Web pages that promote racism and strong views against other cultures, groups, etc are being viewed on a daily basis. The foundation for violence and crime stems from the roots of negative opinions of others. When people come across these sites, children especially, they are presented with profanity, cruelty, and hatred in its most potent form. If society allows these views to be so easily accessible to the uncorrupted public, then we as a society are solely responsible for any crime committed involving the views expressed by these sites.

The final topic I will discuss is email, chat rooms, and instant messaging. Even though people think that it could never happen to them, people should be made aware of the dangers of this seemingly innocent form of conversation. Kids of all ages have access to chat rooms. These “rooms” can be categorized by sections of specific interest or consist of random people having a conversation via the internet. So if children have this unlimited access to these rooms, then, in turn, so does the entire outside world. According to the National Center for Victims of Crime, “The internet is held accountable for 1,006,970 stalking cases reported by women, and 370,990 cases are reported annually by men.” Every day people click on their instant message box, or enter a chat room to meet with new people. Some people even look for relationships through this extremely dangerous method. A victim has no way of knowing who they are typing to on the other side of that cyber link. A young girl could meet someone online who says to be a teenage boy that is her age who is interested in everything she is and is a perfectly normal person. But on the contrary, it could be a forty year old pedophile trying to persuade the girl to meet him somewhere so he can kidnap her. While the kids are away from parents, looking for guidance, comfort, or affection on the internet, stalkers are constantly looking for windows into the easily persuaded minds of young troubled teens.

Censoring the internet is a mandatory action we must take in order to keep our society and its morals standing. If we do nothing to slow the corruption of society, then it can only get worse. Many ways of censoring the internet have been attempted and are available to the public, such as firewalls, passwords and blockers, but in order to make these things affective, there needs to be a more broad scale approach to the problem. The things we have today to block sites can be broken and hacked through. Even though there are many other mediums through which people can witness violence, sex, and media that portrays inappropriate behavior, censoring the internet is the best place to start.
