I\'ve been told that morning sickness is hereditary. If your mom had it, there is a good chance you will have it, too. Guess what... I my mom had it and so did I.
I was sick for the entire nine months. The first trimester was the worst. I consistently lost weight until I was around 20 - 22 weeks. At the end of my pregnancy I had only gained 7 pounds TOTAL. (My baby weighed six pounds, 12 ounces.) I begged my doctor for relief. If you\'re sick enough they can give you medications that are safe for the baby and help with the nausea and vomiting. But he never thought I was sick enough. I puked until the walls of my mouth and throat were so raw they were bleeding -- but I wasn\'t sick enough for the meds.
So I was left to find other ways of coping. I discovered some basic rules for easing my morning sickness.
1) Nothing works every time. I discovered a lot of tricks that helped. But not every trick worked every time. So I would just keep trying things until I found the trick that worked time.
2) Always keep a garbage pale or barf bag close by. I carried zip lock bags everywhere I went. I had zip lock bags in my pockets, in my purse, in my desk drawer, and in my car. I recommend the big, high quality, zip lock bags, because once you\'ve filled... you really don\'t want it to leak out.
3) Keep crackers and other healthy snacks handy. I had crackers stashed next to all my zip lock barf bags.
4) Keep hydrated and don\'t let yourself get over-hungry. If I got too dehydrated or too hungry I would get really sick. Sometimes I had to force myself to eat a little something, but a completely empty stomach was worse.
Here are some of the things that worked for me:
1) Sea Bands. I cannot sing the praises of Sea Bands loudly enough. Sea bands are little wristbands that you wear. They have a hard plastic ball that presses on an acupuncture spot. They are normally used to control seasickness. But they work wonders for morning sickness. You can buy them at any drug store. Sometimes I would sleep with mine on. They made an incredible difference.
2) Orange Gatorade. I normally hate the taste of Gatorade, but a friend said it helped with her morning sickness. I was so desperate I tried it. Not only did it help, but while I was pregnant I actually liked the taste of it.
3) Crackers. These are the old stand-by remedy, but they do help. As I said before I had crackers stashed everywhere.
4) Eat a small amount of protein. Sometimes a little protein (like a bite of cheese or a little peanut butter) will help. You don\'t need much and I don\'t know why it helped... but sometimes it did.
5) Drink lots of water. Sometimes putting a little lemon or drinking lemonade will help, too.
6) Ginger. Ginger ale, ginger candy, ginger cookies, anything with ginger... it settles the stomach.
7) A little sugar. Sometimes putting a Lifesaver or other hard candy in my mouth would settle my stomach.
Well, these are the things that helped me with my morning sickness from the great beyond. I hope that some of these ideas will help you, too.
