Its midnight, a quiet, silent night, everything is perfectly still, except for a lost wondering, young, peasant girl, standing alone in the pitch black darkness of the night. Above her is only a half shining moon creeping through the night darkness No one is around it is as if it were the end of the world. It’s as though this young girl is the last living soul on earth. This is a painting by Johannes Vermeer called “Girl with a Pearl Earring.”
With her worrisome look and her jet black eyes, this young peasant girl seems as though she wants to yell or scream for help. However, she is overwhelmed by fear and anxiety and is therefore unable to do so. Black piercing eyes and faint, fading eyebrows looks as though she is seeing right through you. Just like when a teacher looks when a student tells her “the dog ate my homework.” The peasant young girl’s head is tilted at a 45-degree angle, and her silver, tear dropped shaped pearl earring is dangling in the wind. The earring looks like it could even be a miniature Christmas ball like ornament. She is looking over her shoulder, as though, she is extremely petrified by someone or something. She looks so unhappy it is as if she does not know where to go or which way to turn.
This young peasant girl, dressed in her heavy wool, sandy, beach brown kimono, and her long dangling bluish-purple turban wrapped around her head, is aimlessly searching for her tribal family. This sacred kimono has been passed down from generation to generation. This is obvious because the wear and tear of the ceremonial kimono and the way its much to large for her. It represents her family’s tribal beliefs and signifies her strong family heritage. In the kimono like covering symbols of the traditional tribal customs can be viewed, so that they will never be forgotten. Underneath the kimono, is a white collard like scarf wrapped loosely around her neck, for extra warmth and covering. This protects her from the many blistery, gusting midnight winds. These blowing winds have already affected her in many ways. This is seen through her irrated, chapped red strawberry lips, and her blotched peach, cream colored completion.
In the dark lonely night this young girls demeanor is sad, unhappy and extremely frightened. This is seen through the reflection of the glowing midnight moon. In the quiet secluded darkness this young peasant girl has been left alone. Although scared and frightened she has only fear itself to be scared of.
In conclusion, of Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring antique painting I feel that it is a type of painting that only leaves more questions. Like who is the girl? Where is she really from? What is bothering her so much that she looks in such a pensive way? Many interruptions can be assumed from this painting after all it is a matter of an individual’s personal opinion. I feel that this is an outstanding masterpiece, like Visa, “priceless.”
