In America’s political system there are two different parties, the Republicans and the Democrats. Each party has two sub-branches, a classic branch and a new “neo” branch. Because of these newfound branches, the members of them have different beliefs on government size and morals. The branches views obviously differ from the other parties views, but they also have “in party” differences as well.
The first branch of the Republican party are the Classic Conservatives. In today’s day and age, there are less and less of these types of conservatives. The classic conservative believes that the government should play a small roll in the economy. They feel that big business should handle themselves with very little government interference. They are very morally self-contained, which means that they don’t believe in gay marriage, but they won’t openly criticize gay people for wanting to get married. They will just turn up their nose for the most part and look down on them. The best example of a Classic Conservative is former New York Mayor Rudolph Guiliani.
The second branch of the Republican party are the Neo-Conservatives. “Neo” means new, so this is how younger conservative are being brought up. The “neo”-conservative feels that the government should be economically small but socially big. That means that they feel that big business should govern themselves, but that the government should play a bigger part in everyday life. Unlike their classic counterparts, they are extremely morally judgmental. They vehemently oppose gay marriage, and are very vocal about their views on it. The best examples of “Neo”-Conservatives are former senate majority leader Tom DeLay and current President George W. Bush.
The first branch of the Democratic party are the Classic Liberals. Today, the majority of liberals in politics are classic liberals. They believe that governments should be involved in everyday activity. Classic liberals feel that the bigger the role of the government the better society will be because of it. They are also very morally idealistic. They have an open mind when it comes to gay marriage, and will defend gay rights to the grave. There are many classic liberals in politics today, the list includes Charles Rangal, Chuck Schumer, Russ Feingold and Ted Kennedy.
The second branch of the Democratic party are the “Neo”-Liberals. These new versions of liberals are gaining steam, but haven’t quite yet taken over the party. They feel that government should be involved in activities, but not quite as much as classic liberals do. They have strong morals, but they aren’t quite as liberal morally as their classic counterparts. In fact, some would call them morally cautious. They feel that gays should have the right to have civil unions, but they aren’t ready for gay marriage yet. The best examples of “neo”-liberals are Senator Hilary Clinton and John Edwards.
The way the two political parties are separated currently, only 2 branches from each party exist. The “Neo”-Conservatives are the majority in the Republican party and the Classic Liberals dominate the Democrat party. The Classic Conservatives are a dying breed, since the members of that branch are usually from the North East. In the north east, the majority of children are being brought up as “neo”-liberals. There is a much closer gap between classic and “neo” liberals than there is between the two conservative parties.
The way the political spectrum currently is, the two major branches of each party are the farthest apart. This is why the two sides often clash over the simplest things. If one of those two main branches would change, then Congress and the Senate would agree on much more things. Until that day, we are going to have to deal with the two polar opposite branches butting heads.
