Three people who live by lies in the play A Streetcar Named Desire are Stella, Blanche, and Eunice. All of these people have, in one way or another, lied to get through life more easily. Though all of these people in A Streetcar Named Desire try to hide what they are really feeling inside they have to lie to show everyone else around them that they are still going on as normal. In the process of lying they must keep lying to hold on to the everyday routine that they go through. Lying is not a good way to go through life.
Eunice lies in A Streetcar Named Desire in order to keep her marriage alive. She gets into a fight with Steve. She accuses by saying, “I heard about you and that blonde!” (pg. 86) After this she promptly goes and gets a drink in order to escape her problems with Steve. Eunice threatens to call the police many times but then realizes in order for her life to stay the same she has to go and drink until she either forgives or forgets about her problems. Eunice lies to herself about her marital problems.
Stella tries to convince herself that Stanley did not rape Blanche, and that sending off Blanch to a mental institution is a good idea. She does this when she says, “What have I done to my sister. Oh god what have I done to my sister!” (pg. 176) She would be able to go through life how it was before Blanche arrived and everything would go back to normal. All this time though she must keep telling herself that Stanley has not raped Blanche because if she admitted to herself that it was true then there would be no good reason to send Blanche off to the mental hospital. Stella lies about to herself about Blanche’s almost only truthful words.
Blanche lies through the entirety of A Streetcar Named Desire. She lies about going to the Tarantula Inn, how she lost the house, that she was fired from her job, and even to herself about being lovely in the darkness. When Blanche says, “Whoever you are-I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.” She is admitting to lying in a way. She is saying that she has depended on her sister and her brother-in-law for her lies so if they hear her say this then they may forgive her. When Blanche stays out of the light, and even goes out of her way to dim or turn off lights this is symbolism for not only her physical appearance being shadowed, but her putting everyone around her into darkness to her entire life. This is evident when Mitch pulls the shade off of the light bulb and reveals Blanche’s lies to him. Blanche lives by her lies by sucking the life out of other people for her own life to stay as normal as possible.
Many people lie throughout the novel A Streetcar Named Desire. They must keep lying to move through life at its daily norm. They can only do this until they are found out and their past catches up with them. The webs fall down and break the lives of their owners in pieces. Lying through life will only get you so far, but you will always be found out in the end.
