This story is about a lesson that my friends and I learned from a truck driver. It was a fine day when two of my best friends and I were walking home from school. We were in second grade and just immature as everybody else in our age. As we were walking on the sidewalk I found a big sucker on the ground. I wanted to have some fun and told one of my friends, Junghee, that if he is brave enough, he could throw that sucker and hit a car driving by. He hesitated for a while and I started to make fun of him for being such a chicken. I could see that he was about to do what I asked him to, but he was still hesitating, afraid of getting in a trouble. I said, ¡°Come on, I throw small rocks at cars all the time. You will be just fine. And what else the driver is going to do, huh? They are not going to stop and run after us. And even if they do, we can still run away from them. We are pretty fast.¡± He agreed with me and he threw the sucker high in the air. I didn¡¯t see any car coming at that very moment, but within a second, a loud noise startled my ears when the sucker hit this blue truck¡¯s windshield. The truck driver kept going for a second so I thought nothing was going to happen. However, he suddenly hit the brake and stopped in front of the police station. The first thing I had in my mind was that he was going to go into the police station and tell the police officer what we did, and that¡¯s what scared me for a second. Fortunately he did not go into the police station. In spite of going into the police station, he looked at us and started running toward us. That¡¯s when I said, ¡°Run!¡±
We started running towards our apartment area, which was about 1000 meters away from the police station. I turned back when we were running, and saw that man¡¯s mad face. His face was so red that I thought he was totally drunk. As soon as I reached the main entrance of our apartment, my friend and I hid behind the trees and bushes. However, Junghee was a little bit behind us. The mad man grabbed him on the neck and dragged him out of the main entrance. My other friend and I were too scared to help at first, but I started following that man saying, ¡°Let go of my friend!¡± I don¡¯t know how brave I was at that time but when he didn¡¯t let my friend go, I ran up to him and kicked him in the butt. He gave me a dirty look and I couldn¡¯t move anymore. I checked my pants and was glad that I didn¡¯t pee on my pants. He dragged my friend into his truck and drove away from me. My other friend was not even near my sight, and I did not know what to do.
When the blue truck and my friend were gone, I realized that the police station was right in front of me. I went in there and told the police officer what happened. Of course I didn¡¯t tell him about the sucker. I just told him that my friend has got kidnapped from a blue truck driver. He told me to call my friend¡¯s parents and my teacher at school. I did as he told me and spent most of that day in the police station, worrying about my friend. I worried so much because I am the one who caused everything. I told my friend to throw that sucker, and I wasn¡¯t smart enough to get that truck¡¯s place number. One of police officers saw me worrying to death and told me to just go home and relax. He said he would let me know as soon as he finds anything about my friend.
I came home and could not do anything but to worry about my friend. I called Junghee¡¯s house about an hour after and his mom told me he is safe, taking a shower. Since he¡¯s house was about a block away from my house, I ran over there and asked my friend what had happened. He said he was so scared and cried, asking that mad man to let him go. According to Junghee, that truck driver took him to this area where people build buildings. A friend of the truck driver came over to them and asked him what he is doing with that kid. That¡¯s when the truck driver asked his friend how he should take care of Junghee. Pointing at a shovel the truck driver said, ¡°Should I just bury him alive like we did the other day?¡± His friend told him to do whatever, and that¡¯s when he dragged my friend into his truck again. He threatened my friend while he was driving and told my friend to promise him not to throw any object to any cars anymore. When my friend did, the truck driver let him out of his car. My poor friend didn¡¯t know where he was, but just relieved for the fact that that mad man did not harm him. Junghee told me he took a taxi to get home and his mom paid the taxi driver the fee.
Our teacher heard the whole story from Junghee¡¯s mom that night, however, they still didn¡¯t know about the sucker. The very next day when I went to school, my teacher had a present and an award for me. I did not even know where that came from but when she announced to the whole class what I did to save my friend, everything made sense. My teacher told the class how brave I was going into the police station, helping to find my friend. As an award, she presented ten notebooks and ten pencils for me. I hesitated, not knowing what to do, and that¡¯s when Junghee told me to accept it so we can share later. I just smiled and accepted the award.
I wrote this story at our school¡¯s storybook the year when I was graduating and won another award for writing a good story. This is a true story that happened to my friend, and the important lesson from the truck driver is this: DO NOT THROW SUCKER AT CARS!
